Victor Boniface is expected to not player for Werder Bremen again after undergoing knee surgery.
The Bundesliga winner with Bayer Leverkusen hasn’t played since December 7th and has only played 11 times in total, nine of which were substitute appearances, equating in in just 326 minutes, zero goals and two assists.
Signed injured, Boniface didn’t play until September due to injury struggles.
The scenes are reminiscent of Werder Bremen‘s disastrous transfer of the similarly injury-prone Naby Keita from Liverpool.
Boniface came without such a bad record, but driving offences had meant that other clubs weren’t willing to take the risk like Bremen have proved they’re happy to.
The 25-year-old Nigerian even failed a medical at AC Milan, a club more commensurate to his title winning credentials from Leverkusen.
Updating the media on a long-running saga over Boniface’s current injury, CEO Peter Niemeyer said: “We are pleased that we now have a solution and that Victor is having the operation. This brings clarity for all parties.
“Due to his rehabilitation, we no longer expect Victor to play for Werder this season.”
Boniface signed for just a year, and will now almost certainly depart in the summer, if not before.
