Vincent Kompany has admitted that Mikel Arteta may have a point over their sides’ respective workloads.
Arsenal’s Arteta was asked to comment on Bayern Munich’s stunning 5-4 defeat to PSG in the Champions League and explained why such performances aren’t possible for his side.
After saying it was one of the best games he’d ever seen, the Basque coach caveated his praise by comparing it to the Premier League.
“When I look at the number of minutes played and how fresh these players are, I’m not surprised,” he said.
“To deliver such quality moments, you have to be in top form.
“The difference between these leagues and the way they are contested is enormous.
“Arsenal, PSG, and Bayern Munich operate in two different worlds. You only have to look at the statistics to realise that.
“You can’t compare one aspect without considering the overall context; it wouldn’t be fair.”
Kompany responds to Arteta
While Kompany could’ve bit at the comment, he again showed his class by acknowledging the context that Arteta provided.
“I don’t want to comment much on that,” he began.
“I played in the Premier League for many years. I don’t think it was meant as a criticism of Bayern or PSG, but rather a discussion.
“In England, you have 38 league games, the league cup, FA Cup, no winter break.
“It’s not for me to discuss that, but it’s legitimate. Jürgen Klopp spoke about that many times too.”
