While the coach and directors have taken most of the blame for Italy’s latest embarrassment, it’s now the players’ turn.
Head coach Gennaro Gattuso and president of the football federation Gabriele Gravina have both departed after Italy lost their World Cup qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Yet it now looks like some of the players might struggle to make it back in the future.
That’s because La Repubblica report that members of the squad asked about their World Cup qualification bonuses before the disaster against Bosnia sent them packing.
A figure of €300,000 divided up between the squad was reportedly mentioned by the federation, and a number of players inquired about it.
Given the images of them celebrating Bosnia beating Wales in the previous match, accusations of arrogance certainly won’t die down any time soon.
Yet someone does come out in a good light – Gattuso.
Apparently the coach told the players that such inquiries were inappropriate before the big game, and he proved to be right.
