Despite Toni Kroos retiring from club football with the biggest high imaginable, Carlo Ancelotti is still hoping for a change of heart.
The Real Madrid legend recorded an assist in his side’s 2-0 Champions League final triumph over Borussia Dortmund, and Ancelotti even gave him a late substation so he could fully embrace the love of Madrid’s supporters at Wembley.
Kroos announced his retirement in the run-up to the game aged 34, saying that he wanted to go out at the peak of his powers. Ancelotti responded by saying it takes ‘huge balls’ to make such a call.
However, the Italian thinks there’s still a chance of a turnaround, commenting post-match: “We hope he changes his mind and if he does, we’ll be there.
“All the fans are grateful to him. I’ve told him we are waiting for him to change his mind – we are waiting for you.
“He is a legend in this club and we all thank him for what he has done. Not only through his play, but also through his attitude, his professionalism. In ten years he has not missed a single day.”
Despite very likely playing his last game for Real, Kroos still has Euro 2024 to go before hanging up his boots. The midfielder came out of retirement for his home tournament in Germany and will be hoping for one last hurrah.
