Toni Kroos’ legendary Real Madrid career was characterised by staying out of controversy, but after retiring he may be turning towards populist politics.
The six-time Champions League winner and 2014 World Cup champion played his final football match on Friday, getting knocked out of Euro 2024 by Spain in extra time.
It was a disappointing end, but one that didn’t take the gleam off a stunning career, with his final club game being a record-equalling sixth Champions League.
However, his iconic status may be at risk, with the 34-year-old’s first act being some very controversial comments on a podcast.
Kroos joined ZDF’s Lanz & Precht podcast and said: “Germany is no longer the country it was ten years ago when we left, because of mass immigration. It’s constantly present and uncontrolled.”
Kroos added that he would stay in Spain after his retirement and compared both countries saying that he feels uncomfortable letting his daughter go out “at 11 at night in a big German city.”
The former midfielder also said: “Some immigrants are good people but if you can’t distinguish them from those who are not good for us, it will be difficult in the end.”
