Real Madrid’s coaching shortlist for next season has increased by one according to reports in France.
RMC Sport insider Fabrice Hawkins claims that Didier Deschamps is under consideration by Florentino Perez.
Deschamps has already announced his departure as France coach after this summer’s 2026 World Cup.
While not totally appreciated by those in France despite his 2018 win and 2022 final, Deschamps is a Madrid coach on the face of it.
Why Deschamps to Real Madrid makes sense
He’s a winner, clearly, taking the highest honour in world football along with a 2010 cup triumph with Marseille and unexpected 2004 Champions League final with Monaco.
He’s also a steady hand, and someone who makes tweaks and isn’t dogmatic when it comes to tactics, much like Madrid’s most successful-ever coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Deschamps also has experience of playing in Spain with Valencia, and like Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane he was an elite player too.
But on top of all of that, his most fitting skill is his ability to master world class dressing rooms, something that undid Xabi Alonso.
Not just any dressing room either, but one that contains Kylian Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Ferland Mendy.
The first two on that list are said to be huge fans of Deschamps, and will likely back and move for his signature.
