Didier Deschamps has attempted to defend Kylian Mbappe… by calling him selfish and saying he doesn’t run enough.
The France coach was speaking at the Sports Journalism Festival in Laval when he made the rather bizarre defence of his captain.
He commented: “We have this image of him as someone very selfish, individualistic. Of course [he is], he’s a striker, it would be ridiculous if he didn’t have a certain amount of selfishness.
“I assure you that, the way things work, he knows that, since becoming captain, his word carries weight with the entire group.”
Deschamps then went further, saying there’s no point in trying to get Mbappe to work harder.
“Whether you like it or not, young people adore him,” he continued.
“Then, if they want to criticise Kylian by saying he needs to run more, at least 11 kilometers per game… Don’t bother, he won’t.
“But, on the other hand, he has many other important and decisive qualities.”
