Fabian Ruiz sat down for a rare interview before facing Uruguay and made sure he settled a score.
The PSG midfielder spoke to DAZN at the Spain’s training camp, but made sure he let them know he wasn’t happy with the Spanish media.
Ahead of the Champions League final win over Arsenal, RTVE conducted a feature on Ruiz which included an interview with his mother.
However, she was subtitled when she spoke, something Ruiz took personally over her Andalusian accent.
Speaking to the Spanish media for the first time since the incident, Ruiz made sure to bring it up.
Finishing the chat, he said: “Finally, if anyone didn’t understand me during the interview, you can subtitle my Andalusian accent.”
The interviewers shock his hand awkwardly, and the studio similarly weren’t sure what to say.
Speaking earlier, he commented: “I am proud of who I am, of my origins, of my region, of Los Palacios, of being Andalusian, of Andalusia.”
RTVE’s president, Jose Pablo Lopez, later apologised for the incident.
The RTVE boss described the decision as a ‘major mistake’ and said the broadcaster is ‘reviewing what went wrong’ to ensure this does not happen again.
Lopez said: “As an Andalusian, this hurts me doubly. The Andalucian accent, the Andalucian way of speaking, is a treasure, a part of our cultural heritage, and it should never be treated as a language barrier that needs translation.”
