Robert Lewandowski’s decision to turn on Poland coach Michal Probierz has backfired spectacularly.
The Barcelona striker announced his decision to step aside from international duty on Sunday due to Probierz, but it seemed to be a case of ‘you can’t fire me, I quit!’.
That’s because the Polish football association had already announced that Lewandowski had the captain’s armband taken from him.
“By decision of head coach Michal Probierz, Piotr Zieliński has become the new captain of the Polish national team,” they said in a statement.
“The head coach has personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire squad and the coaching staff of his decision.”
Lewandowski’s follow up statement read: “Given the circumstances and the loss of trust in the Polish coach, I have decided to give up playing for the national team as long as he remains in charge.
“I hope to have the opportunity to play for the best fans in the world again.”
According to numerous reports in the Polish media, Lewandowski doesn’t have anyone on his side, with the dressing room said to have applauded Probierz’s decision when it was announced in the dressing room.
The disagreements stem back to last March when Lewandowski decided not to play against Malta to keep himself fit for a Barcelona game.
To make matters worse he then criticised his teammates in a post-match dressing room rant, which was seen as incredibly tone deaf.
