It’s fair to say that Paris Saint-Germain’s bid for Rayan Cherki hasn’t gone down well.
News broke this morning that the Ligue 1 champions have made an offer for the Lyon superstar worth a miserly €15million.
Cherki, the 20-year-old entertainer who has lit up Parc Olympique Lyonnais ever since his debut, and likely won’t get a better salary offer from a club that competes for titles.
Born and bred in Lyon, the story is eerily similar to last summer, when PSG snatched another local hero, Bradley Barcola for €15m and PSG quite simply couldn’t say no to the Qatari millions.
The question this time, though, is do they even need him? Marco Asensio and Lee Kang-in both occupy the role Cherki would attempt to fill, and if things don’t go to plan, he could very well spend much of the season on the bench.
Summing up the mood in France, leading magazine SoFoot attacked the bid, and the reasoning behind it.
“PSG has obviously made Rayan Cherki a potential recruit for its next summer transfer window. But a question arises: for what reason?” they wrote.
“French football is suffering from vampirism. In the role of the bloodsucking villain, Paris Saint-Germain. In the role of the frightened blonde, Olympique Lyonnais.”
OL had only just had the positive news that captain and fellow local lad Alexandre Lacazette had rejected a mega offer from Saudi Arabia in order to lead his club in Europe.
Cherki looks far less likely to make such a noble decision, and with PSG desperate to make statements after the loss of Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid, who’s to stop them from again tearing through Ligue 1 in order to repair their squad?
