Paris Brunner’s move to AS Monaco hasn’t gone down well with Borussia Dortmund fans, but Nuri Sahin won’t be made the fall guy.
The 18-year-old striker is seen as one of Germany‘s top youth talents after his U17 World Cup and Euros wins, but won’t be using his talents with his boyhood club.
Instead Brunner joins Monaco for just €4million, and will spend the first year of his contract with Cercle Brugge.
The departure has been condemned by fans who have also had to see another youth team graduate, Tom Rothe, leave, but Sahin has explained why Brunner is different.
“I have to be a bit careful now,” the BVB head coach said and his pre-match press conference.
“We can’t give anyone anything for free, this club is far too big for that.
“I have clearly shown Paris a future from a coaching perspective. I know that the club made him a very good offer and has shown him a future with the team.”
He added: “I wish Brunner all the best from the bottom of my heart and that he has a successful career.
“But the fact is that he would have had to compete with Guirassy, Beier, Haller, Moukoko and our wingers.
“Brunner could have become an important player for Borussia Dortmund, but he decided that he wanted to take the step abroad.”
Slightly agitated, Sahin finished: “What do you expect from me from a sporting perspective? That I say: ‘Here, so that you can extend your contract, you’ll play in the first eleven’? That’s not how it works.”
