Jose Mourinho stunned journalists by conducting his post-match duties in Portuguese following Roma’s 2-1 win over Sassuolo.
The former Real Madrid, Inter, and Chelsea manager had earlier been charged by the Italian football association for his pre-match comments about referee Matteo Marcenaro.
Mourinho said, in Italian, that the official didn’t have the ’emotional stability’ to cover such an important fixture, and he then made sure his words weren’t misunderstood.
Post-match, he said: “I speak in Portuguese because my Italian is evidently not sufficiently polished and strong to express certain concepts.
“When I spoke of emotional stability, I spoke of a quality that, in life and in football, is necessary to be able to perform at the highest levels.”
Mourinho relieved some pressure on himself with the comeback win against 10-men Sassuolo earned by goals from Paulo Dybala and Rasmus Kristensen.
