The fallout from Real Madrid’s Ballon d’Or snub continues, and one of the attendees has had his say.
Mats Hummels was sat alongside Rodri as the Manchester City midfielder picked up football’s top individual prize.
Roma’s Hummels was on the shortlist after a heroic season with Borussia Dortmund where he took the side to the Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid.
Surprisingly, no one from Madrid was in attendance as the club boycotted the award after learning that favourite Vinicius Jr would be winning.
Responding to the snub, Hummels compared Los Blancos to former US president Donald Trump who falsely claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
“Using the words ‘lack of respect’ when you haven’t won an election has a slightly Trumpian feel to it,” Hummels said.
“Unfortunately it’s disrespectful to the others. That’s the bad thing.”
He added: “There’s no question that someone from Real would have deserved it. But there are other amazing players who are just as good.
“It’s bad not to give them the honour. Some teams were more disadvantaged in international football, let me put it this way.”
