Dino Toppmoller has left RC Lens just days after a stunning comeback Champions League win over Slavia Prague.
Sky Germany report the incredible split comes after an internal dispute with the board.
Toppmoller’s assistant Nelson Morgado was reportedly dismissed from his job, and after putting up a fight, he was also let go.
Toppmoller’s mega start with Lens
The German coach only arrived in the summer having earlier left Eintracht Frankfurt and instantly got off to a flyer.
His first match was a Trophée des Champions win over PSG, making in two trophies in a row for the Coupe de France winners.
Ligue 1 form had been underwhelming with one win, a draw and two losses, but Lens’ last European result was as historic as the PSG match.
2-1 down with two minutes of regular time against Slavia in the Champions League, Toppmoller went all out attack and saw his side complete a remarkable 3-2 comeback win.
Toppmoller’s shock Lens departure explained
Sky report that Lens president Joseph Oughourlian called him in late at night to congratulate him, but relations later deteriorated.
Lens informed Toppmoller that his closest confidant, Morgado, would be sacked, with them considering him a ‘troublesome figure’.
He reportedly ‘demanded more commitment, more passion, and more energy from some members of the coaching staff’.
However, Toppmoller deemed the interference unacceptable and stood by his assistant, only for the club to not backdown and dismiss both of them.
L’Equipe add that Yannick Cahuzac is likely to lead the team for Friday’s clash against Monaco and could well be given the role long term.
