LaLiga’s season opener has descended into chaos with two sides told they can’t play at their stadiums.
Celta Vigo have become the second side after Rayo Vallecano who won’t be allowed to open their season at home.
Celta were penned in to play Osasuna on August 16th at Balaidos, but a fungal infection on the pitch has seen the match postponed.
It will now take place on August 27th, assuming the infection is sorted by then.
Celta’s groundspeople have been working around the clock to fit the pitch, with images of it breaking out in yellow patches.
LaLiga and Celta announce suspension of Osasuna clash
A statement on the matter read: “LaLiga agreed this morning, in coordination with the clubs and the RFEF, to postpone the match that was to face Celta and CA Osasuna next Sunday at Abanca Balaídos due to a disease that affected the stadium’s turf, which is currently not suitable for playing football.
“Last week, a technical visit was carried out by LaLiga in which the work carried out to eradicate the disease that affected the turf was validated and it was certified that the field met the quality and safety parameters required for playing sports.
“The weather conditions of recent days have had an adverse effect on the good development that the pitch was having and led to the decision to suspend the match. The match will finally be played next Thursday, August 27, at 8:30 p.m.”
The club added: “Celta regrets the inconvenience and inconvenience that this decision may cause to all fans who had already organised their day to accompany the team at this start of the competition, and appreciates your understanding in this exceptional circumstance.”
Celta are the second top flight LaLiga team to see their opener disrupted after Rayo Vallecao.
The cult Madrid side had their Vallecas stadium licence revoked over safety concerns.
Fellow Madrid side Leganes have allowed their stadium to be used, meaning that Rayo’s opening home fixture against Alaves on August 20th will take place on schedule but at the wrong location.
Rayo Vallecano fans won’t travel to new home location
Supporters of the team have also said that they won’t be travelling to Leganes.
The Rayo Vallecano Supporters’ Federation and the ADRV Platform said: “We will not be present at Butarque Stadium, nor in the stands of El Plantío, nor in the stands of any other stadium besides Vallecas.
“We demand that Rayo Vallecano inform its season ticket holders about how many matches will be played away from Vallecas.
“We believe it is essential that the club undertake this exercise in transparency.
“The club should offer the possibility of requesting a refund of the proportional amount of the season ticket price to season ticket holders who do not attend matches not played at the Vallecas Stadium.”
