Julian Nagelsmann has commented on the biggest story in German football, his relationship with Jurgen Klopp.
Germany smashed Curacao 7-1 in their World Cup opener, and with the match a non-event, attention turned to the sidelines.
Nagelsmann had been dealing with some unhelpful pressure from high-profile pundits Klopp and Thomas Muller who were questioning his squad selection.
Klopp later apologised live on TV about one particular remark where he said Nagelsmann was ‘still’ Germany coach, which some interpreted as Klopp suggesting he might replace him.
Nagelsmann appeared quite awkward during the apology, and didn’t comment once Klopp had finished, quickly leaving the stage with some brief handshakes.
Ahead of taking on Ivory Coast, Nagelsmann faced the media and was asked if his reaction was a sign he didn’t accept Klopp’s apology.
Nagelsmann breaks silence on Klopp
“I think I’ve said everything I need to say on the matter,” he responded, despite having not said anything.
“I gave him a high five, you’re right about that. Why wouldn’t I? I wasn’t expecting a public apology.
“I’m concentrating on the team and the games, and I’m trying to block everything else out as best I can.”
Klopp was shown the press conference scenes, and decided to hit out at the journalists present.
“Oh dear. If there’s one thing I don’t miss, it’s you people,” he said to his co-host pundit.
Klopp’s apology to Nagelsmann
Speaking to Nagelsmann after the Curacao win, Klopp said: “I’ve already found the most hated word of the year – and that’s ‘still’.
“I could have punched myself in the face for it, but it was already too late and we were on TV.
“That just slipped out so casually, but it’s completely irrelevant. I hope everyone out there understands that.
“What I’ve realised is: I’ll be 59 the day after tomorrow and I’m still an idiot. But it just happened. We’re completely on your side.”
