In just his first home match back at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho has already been booed.
Madrid beat Real Sociedad 4-1 on Wednesday night, making it six points from six to start the season.
However, the score was 1-1 at half-time, and some sections of the Bernabeu booed and whistled the players off the pitch.
Mourinho responds to boos and whistles
Responding post-match, Mourinho said: “In the end, the boos and the applause have their fair share.
“They also help you grow and don’t hurt anyone. There are good coaches and players in Spanish football, and they aren’t afraid of the big teams.
He added: “Both Espanyol and Real Sociedad tried to win, and that’s something to be valued.”
“We all know the Bernabeu. That’s just how they are; it’s a consequence of history.
“The demands are high, and people want more. Being a fan is one thing. They can afford it and pay to experience their emotions, and we’re where we are because of this capacity.
“It’s important to stay calm in the face of difficulty. The team is growing mentally and emotionally.
“We didn’t know how to press, so we expected compact defences without the ball, and the Bernabeu whistled because they want Real Madrid to dominate.”
Mourinho reserves special praise for Mbappe
Mourinho then went on to praise Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr’s roles in turning things around in the second half.
Mbappe scored a hat-trick with Vini getting the other.
The Portuguese coach said: “I always say that in my career I’ve had the opportunity to coach incredible players and also good players, but not at the very top.
“You have to teach them to play as a team, but very little on an individual level.
“Kylian has tremendous quality and he doesn’t just score goals, he has a lot of skill.
“I really liked the second half and his composure in the face of difficulty. I liked it a lot.”
Mourinho was then asked about Mbappe in comparison to Cristiano Ronaldo, and said: “I don’t like to compare players, but this guy is incredible.
“I’m so glad he made history at the World Cup. There are 25 World Cup-winning players, but only one is for the eternity of football because he’s scored the most goals in a single World Cup.
“I see him as very hungry to achieve many successes with Real Madrid. The team played as a unit, keeping possession and holding on. Maybe training next to the Madring circuit has given them an extra gear.
“He’s an absolutely incredible player. I prefer 40 goals with titles to 60 without, I prefer 40 goals for the team to 60 goals for himself.”
