One of Spain’s most prominent journalists isn’t exactly hyped for the return of Jose Mourinho.
All signs point to the Portuguese returning to the Bernabeu after departing the club in 2013.
Reports claim Madrid president Florentino Perez has made Mourinho his first choice to replace Alvaro Arbeloa, and talks have already taken place.
However, the renowned Paco Gonzalez won’t be happy to see the Benfica coach back.
“I know there are a lot of ‘Mourinho fans’ lately, but Mourinho is still just a guy who’s spent the last ten years coaching lower-ranked teams,” he said on Cadena COPE.
“He doesn’t win, he’s no longer the dynamic player he was when he came from Inter Milan and won the European Cup.
“He’s a guy who’s managed by Jorge Mendes, who doesn’t talk to Real Madrid, or he talks to José Ángel, but not to Florentino Perez.”
Mourinho is a thug
Gonzalez continued: “Florentino Perez didn’t end things very well with Mourinho either.
“At that time, I got along very well with Florentino, and he didn’t offer him a contract extension.
“Mourinho left the dressing room divided, Casillas acting like a mole, Ramos wearing an Ozil shirt, and on top of that, he’s a thug.
“Just as I don’t like Pique, who as president is a thug, I don’t like Mourinho because he’s a thug, and I don’t like thugs.”
Despite Gonzalez’s frustration, some in the Spanish media see Mourinho as the only available coach who can settle a dressing room in dissaray.
Yet good friend Luis Figo isn’t a subscriber to that reputation.
Mourinho isn’t tough
“Mourinho is a friend of mine, and I wish him all the best,” he said. “If his happiness lies in coaching Real Madrid, then so be it.
“I didn’t know Mourinho was known for his tough approach. I’ve had him as a translator, as an assistant, and as a head coach.
“I don’t think Real Madrid needs a tough coach. I’m not an advocate of the term ‘tough’.
“You have to manage 25 egos, you have to understand football, and you have to manage egos to convince the players to pull in the same direction.
“At Real Madrid, you need a coach with management skills and common sense.”
