After blanking reporters earlier this week, Jose Mourinho has now responded to links to Real Madrid.
The ever-reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that Real president Florentino Perez has made Mourinho his No.1 target for next season.
The news quickly whipped around Europe, and Mourinho refused to comment on it when doing media for an event in Italy.
Now, though, previewing Benfica’s next Primeira Liga match, he addressed the headlines.
Mourinho shuts down Real Madrid talk
Asked if he’s been in contact with his former side, Mourinho said: “No, nobody from Real Madrid has spoken to me, I can guarantee that.
“I’ve been in football for too many years, just like you’ve been in journalism, and we’re used to these things, but nothing from Real Madrid.”
He was then asked about reports a meeting with Perez is scheduled for next week and gave a similar answer.
“Nothing. I can’t say anything more,” he responded.
“I already told your colleague that regarding Real Madrid, nothing, and regarding Benfica, you already know the situation.
“I have one more year on my contract with Benfica, and that’s it.”
Will Mourinho join Real Madrid?
Despite Madrid wanting Mourinho, there’s been no indication from the coach that he wants to leave Benfica.
In fact, Mourinho has continually said he wants a better contract than the current two-year deal he has in Lisbon.
The legendary coach was asked about Rui Borges extension at Sporting, and struck a similar tone about stability.
“Rui Borges’ renewal… he’s happy and I’m happy for him. I can’t say much more about it,” he said.
“Benfica has been mine since I arrived, but obviously I understand his words.
“The longer a coach stays at a club, the more the team is his, the squad is his… it’s a normal process.
“Look at examples like Arsenal and Manchester City, who have had the same coach for six or seven years; obviously, all the details belong to their coaches.
“Coaches who come and go find it harder to leave their mark. We’ll see.”
