Jose Mourinho was keen to use Nicolas Otamendi’s latest landmark as a lesson for his young squad.
Otamendi reached 250 appearances for Benfica, the highest number of any club during his career, and was presented with a shirt by president Rui Costa after reaching the figure in a 3-0 win over Tondela.
When it was Mourinho‘s turn to speak, he spoke in Otamendi’s native Spanish but sent a message to the squad.
“He deserves me to speak in his own language, but my message isn’t for him, it’s for you,” he said.
“At minute 90+5: a counter-attack against our team and he made a 75-meter sprint, with a score of 2-0.
“My message is not for him, my message is for you.”
