Jose Mourinho may be a little tired of Benfica’s refereeing statements, but not enough to counter them.
Portuguese football has been in the dumpster this season with each of the ‘Big Three’ aiming statements at each other over officiating.
The latest came from Benfica speaking out against the refereeing in Sporting’s 4-2 win over Santa Clara on Friday night.
Asked for his thoughts on the Eagles statement, Mourinho backed it, but appeared to be pretty fed up with the continued fiasco.
“In a world of sycophants, I’ll be one too,” he responded.
“I’ll say I’m 100% in agreement with my president, which is what the others do.”
Despite his apparent minor disagreement, Mourinho has been just as bad complaining about referees this season.
So when he was asked about Sporting and Porto taking chunks out of each other and how it could benefit Benfica, he didn’t hold back.
“Has Benfica benefited?” he replied. “Since the beginning of the season, have you seen Benfica benefit from anything? I haven’t seen it yet.
“Sometimes I hear talk of breaths of fresh air, and I was preparing to try, in one aspect, to be a breath of fresh air. Which would be my team winning with refereeing errors, and me going out and saying ‘we won 3 points’.
“But errors in our favor? It hasn’t happened yet. And I hope it doesn’t.
“But if it eventually happens, I’ll leave the challenge. And then I’ll go out and say that Benfica benefited. But until now I can’t understand in what way.
“That situation between the two presidents of Sporting and FC Porto… I already said a couple of weeks ago that in situations between presidents I’m just a spectator. Between coaches, yes, between presidents, no.”
