Inter Milan did their best to edge Alessandro Bastoni away from the exit door after he returned to club action on Sunday night.
The defender played 58 minutes in a 5-2 win over Roma and received a standing ovation from San Siro when he was substituted off.
The Inter fans’ support comes after a rough week for Bastoni who was red carded in Italy’s defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in their final World Cup play-off qualifier.
Given a disastrous 2026 for the centre-back who was savaged for a dive and celebration against Juventus, it seems likely he’ll depart the country.
However, Inter president Beppe Marotta did his best to back up the fans’ support post-match.
“The lynching of him is shameful, as if he were guilty of who knows what,” he said.
“Bastoni is an asset to Inter and Italian football, and we consider him as such.
“I read that it’s almost obligatory for him to leave this club, but that’s not the case. Then, as with all players, these are issues we’ll address later.”
