While the €90million fee Liverpool paid Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike may be a lot, it’s nowhere in the most expensive deals of all time.
That is however, until you filter in one crucial category – uncapped players.
Ekitike is yet to play for France’s senior side, only the under 21s, making him the most expensive uncapped player of all time, and by some distance.
His €90m tops the previous record of €65m Manchester City paid Athletic Bilbao for Aymeric Laporte in 2017, when the French hopeful later switched to Spain and became a European champion.
Uncapped Englishman Jamie Gittens slots into third with his €64.3m switch from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea.
Rounding out the top five is Leny Yoro who went from Lille to Manchester United for €62m, and €60m Nico Gonzalez who switched Porto for Manchester City.
