Amid Marseille’s current crisis, Mason Greenwood’s treatment isn’t going down well in the dressing room.
OM are on their second coach and president of the season and things continue to worsen.
Under Habib Beye things have deteriorated after Roberto De Zerbi’s sacking and OM now sit sixth, having just come off a late draw to relegation-threatened Nice.
Last time out in defeat against Lorient Beye and sporting director nuclear on the players, and while Marseille deserved to win against Nice, another poor result has showed just how much trouble they’re in.
And so has the latest report from L’Equipe.
Greenwood causing Marseille issues
The Europe-leading French outlet has detailed the goings on in the OM dressing room, taking a particular look at star striker Mason Greenwood.
The English striker was signed under a cloud in 2024 when Manchester United agreed on a departure over a domestic abuse case which was later dropped by a key witness.
Yet it’s not that, but his preferential treatment which is causing issues.
A source told L’Equipe that: “Mason has always received special treatment since his arrival, he’s always been very privileged.”
Currently struggling with an injury, they add that ‘Greenwood doesn’t operate under the same rules as the others’ and ‘his behaviour had already caused considerable irritation in the spring of 2025’.
It was previously reported that relations with sporting director Mehdi Benatia had completely broken down and now L’Equipe claim he only communicated his current injury through his lawyer.
They write: “It was his lawyer who wrote to a club official to explain that the player was still complaining about his crutch, and Beye then had to initiate the discussion and discover that Greenwood felt he only had thirty minutes left in him.”
They add that the ‘Englishman can be late for meetings, which happened again last week for a meal’.
Involvement with Greenwood caused issues for De Zerbi at new club Tottenham with fans complaining about his response to the previous allegations.
The same could be said for Beye, who tried to wash his hands of the scandal on arrival only for his relationship with the player to later deteriorate.
“I’m not a public tribunal, I’m not here to judge people. I’m his coach,” Beye said about the anger at Spurs.
“Whatever is happening in another country is not something I’m going to comment on.
“Since I wasn’t the one who experienced the situation firsthand, today I see my role as coach, and that’s all there is to it.”
