Marseille, France and Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has paid tribute to the late Palestine national team captain Sulejman Al-Obeid.
The former national team captain was known as the ‘Palestinian Pele’ as he won the league’s Golden Boot for three consecutive seasons with Kadamat.
He became a club legend by refusing to leave after relegation in 2022. The following season, Obeid helped Kadamat return to the top flight.
The forward was 43 at the time of his death, with CNN reporting that he was killed by Israeli bombing while waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza.
In response, Cantona wrote on social media: “Israel has just killed Palestinian national team star Suleiman Al-Obeid while waiting for aid in Rafah. He was named ‘The Pelé of Palestine’ HOW MUCH LONGER ARE WE GOING TO LET THEM COMIT THIS GENOCIDE??? FREE PALESTINE.”
Mohamed Salah also referenced the story, replying to a UEFA tribute writing, ‘can you tell us how he died, where, and why?’
