Relegated for the first time in their 112-year history last summer, Santos FC are straight back up to the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.
The Brazilian giants beat Coritiba 2-0 to clinch promotion at the first time of asking after their all-time low.
With club and sporting icon Pele dying in December 2022, Santos paid tribute to the legend in the aftermath, writing on social media: “We smile again. He smiles again.
“Up there, he followed the beginning of our nightmare, today he shows his holy smile at our triumphant return.
“Thank you for continuing to watch over us, King Pelé. The rebirth of Santos will bear your blessing.
“Your kingdom will be well protected. Because it is eternal. Just like Santos. Just like you.”
Things then turned to another club legend – Neymar.
Brazil’s all-time top scorer started out at Santos, but is currently at Al Hilal and soon to become a free agent after an injury-hit stint in Saudi Arabia.
Neymar has previously asked the club to reserve his number 11 shirt, and vice president Osvaldo Nico has now talked up his return as a free agent.
“He will arrive in June. That is the conversation we are having,” he said.
