Germany were stunned 2-0 in their opening World Cup 2026 qualifier against Slovakia and one area of the pitch was called into question by one of the country’s greats.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side have now just one once in their last five matches, which all came in 2025, losing in the Nations League semi-finals against Portugal, third place match against France, and now the Slovakia disaster.
They did so despite a front two which should have been a dream pairing – Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade.
The pair transferred to the Premier League from the Bundesliga in the summer for a combined £185million, but Wirtz has so far struggled at Liverpool, and has now been called out by Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Identifying Germany’s biggest problem, he said: “It takes too long. There’s no vision, no creativity.
“We don’t have a player who can play a ball over 30 or 40 meters. You can’t break a team like that like that. No goal threat, no spirit.”
