Nick Woltemade hasn’t done his relationship with Newcastle fans any good by training with one of his former sides.
Werder Bremen posted a picture of the Germany international joining their pre-season.
“There’s no place like home,” they wrote. “Nick Woltemade is training in Bremen for a few days during his vacation. It’s great to have you here.”
The striker is from Bremen and spent 14 years with the club before switching to Stuttgart on a free transfer in 2024 and taking off.
Woltemade’s Germany exit doesn’t go to plan
His performances earned him a hefty €75million move to Newcastle in 2025 where he got off to a decent star before dropping off considerably.
Woltemade’s goal output fell, and so did his relationship with the fans and coach Eddie Howe amid rumblings that he hasn’t settled in England.
Speaking ahead of an underwhelming World Cup where he was barely used, Woltemade appeared to blame Howe for his struggles.
“I’m expected to score or provide an assist in every game,” he said.
“But if I’m not playing in attack, it’s much more difficult for me to get into dangerous scoring positions.
“The intensity of the criticism and the resulting unrest surrounding me have surprised me.
“Nevertheless, some experts continued to view me as a striker. They would ask: Why doesn’t Nick score so few goals? Why doesn’t he provide more assists? Those were the wrong questions, and I didn’t think they were entirely fair.”
Woltemade defended for Germany failure
Woltemade also had a tough time with Nagelsmann who didn’t play him until the final minutes of the last 32 knockout to Paraguay where he missed a penalty.
Coach and TV expert Friederike Kromp said of the move: “That Woltemade, who is making his first appearance in a knockout game, misses a crucial penalty is somewhat to be expected.
“He was practically killed by the coach with his decisions.
“You need him – and then he doesn’t perform… That leaves me speechless. That’s just not how it works, they’re not machines.”
