Nick Woltemade’s new found love for the Premier League is being questioned by Bundesliga fans.
The Germany striker swapped Stuttgart for Newcastle in a £69million deal – a record for both clubs.
Long expected to wind up at Bayern Munich, he’s instead chosen England, and explained why when praising his new club.
“I know the stadium from the games I’ve seen on TV—it looks fantastic and I know the atmosphere there is incredible,” Woltemade told the club’s website.
“I’m really looking forward to playing here and scoring goals.”
However, Stuttgart and Bundesliga fans were quick to quote a podcast interview he did last season which went viral for his love of German football.
“I actually only watch German football. Zero Premier League, no La Liga – nothing at all,” the 23-year-old said on Tommi Schmitt’s Copa TS podcast at the beginning of March .
“If I had to choose between Dresden vs. Rot-Weiss Essen and Liverpool vs. Chelsea, I would simply watch Dresden vs. Essen. A third-division game like that is really great to watch.”
He added: “I watch almost every third-division game whenever possible, and many regional league summaries on YouTube.
“I actually know every player from the first to the third division; I played in the third division myself two years ago.”
