DFB sporting director Rudi Voller has defended star attacker Florian Wirtz over the barrage of criticism he’s received since joining Liverpool.
The former Bayer Leverkusen man opted for England over Bayern Munich in the summer, but has so far struggled to live up to his £116million price tag.
Such a tricky start has seen many pundits single him out, including Sky’s Gary Neville who said he looked like ‘a little boy’ in defeat to Manchester City.
Voller has now struck back emphatically, saying: “That’s not unusual in England, where there are many experts who feel entitled to voice very clear criticism of players.
“But Florian doesn’t let that drive him crazy – we’re seeing it right here with the national team – because he knows that assists or goals aren’t the only proof of quality in football.
“Once he has overcome the normal adjustment period at the club and in the league, he will also impress the English.
“The big step from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen to England demonstrates his courage and self-confidence. Florian is a wonderful player, and that will soon be recognised in England as well.”
