Fenerbahce have scheduled an extraordinary general meeting after a shocking attack from Trabzonspor fans on their players.
And on the agenda of the meeting on April 2 is the possible step of “the withdrawal of our first football team from the Super Lig”.
The decision comes after a 3-2 win for the Istanbul giants descended into chaos at full-time.
Fenerbahce took three points with three minutes to play away at the Papara Park, and celebrated accordingly.
There were then disgusting scenes as members of the home crown flew onto the pitch, with players like Bright Osayi-Samuel and Michy Batshuayi forced to physically defend themselves.
12 arrests were made, and the Turkish Football Federation said: “necessary criminal sanctions will be imposed on those responsible for these unacceptable incidents.”
However, this is sadly far from the first high-profile incident of on-pitch violence this season.
In a statement, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said: “The violence witnessed after the Turkish Süper Lig match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe is absolutely unacceptable – on or off the field, it has no place in our sport or society.
“I have said it before, and I will say it again – without exception, in football, all players have to be safe and secure to play the game which brings such joy to so many people all over the world.
“I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is respected at all levels and for the perpetrators of the shocking events in Trabzon to be held accountable for their actions.”
