Diego Maradona Jr has given a rare interview, escalating tensions before Argentina face England.
The two sides face off in the World Cup semi-finals with the winner taking on Spain in Sunday’s showpiece.
Argentina and England haven’t met since 2002, and have only played each other 18 times in total, with their 1986 clash referred to in Argentina as ‘The Match of the Century’.
Diego Maradona scored a handball and then one of the greatest goals of all-time to knock England out.
The legendary No.10 regularly spoke up his hate for England over the Falklands War and it wasn’t long before the topic came up 40 years later.
Lionel Scaloni has dismissed the tension as ‘just another normal match’ but Maradona Jr says his father would disagree.
Maradona’s son increases England tensions
“My father wouldn’t see it as a normal match,” he told MARCA.
“For all Argentinians and Maradona fans, it will be a special occasion, bringing back memories of the Falklands War and all our brothers who lost their lives there, and then what happened with Dad in 1986.
“My ‘old man’ won a historic match, and since then, nothing has been normal against England.”
Diego Jr then spoke about the heir to his father’s throne, Lionel Messi.
“To be honest, I’ve never had the chance to meet Messi, but he holds a special place in my heart, like all Argentinians, and he deserves to win the title again,” he said.
“He’s the best of ‘humans,’ because my ‘old man’ is unparalleled on this earth: he was an alien of football. But Leo deserves everything that’s happening to him.”
