With Barcelona’s love for Lionel Messi ramping up following his secret midnight Camp Nou visit, calls are growing the the club to honour their greatest-ever player.
Messi made the trip during a stop off with Argentina, and reports claim Barca had no knowledge, with Messi keen not to see anything he does as a gesture of support for president Joan Laporta.
Laporta has regularly talked up honouring Messi following his role in the No.10’s 2021 departure, and has now said he deserves a statute outside the Camp Nou upon completion.
However, some Catalan media outlets are going further, saying Barca should follow what Napoli did with Diego Maradona, and Ajax with Johan Cruyff.
Pundit Antón Meana said: “I don’t know how much the name Camp Nou means to a Barça fan, but it would be an interesting debate for the Barça members. Messi has still done many more things than Maradona did in Naples.”
Miguel Martín Talavera added: “It’s clear that Leo Messi is the best player in Barça’s history, and for many, the best player in the history of football. The exponential leap the club has made with him on the field… there are more than enough reasons for the stadium to bear his name.”
Manu Carreño finished: “Between a statue and naming the stadium after him, what does the Barça member prefer? That’s where the interest lies.”
