It’s a miracle that Marcelo Bielsa survived the international break given what Uruguay’s former players are saying about him.
Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez retired from the national team after the summer’s Copa America, and made some startling comments about Bielsa.
The former Barcelona striker said that Bielsa wouldn’t talk to senior players and treated staff members poorly. He also predicted that there would be more early retirements.
His former strike partner for Uruguay, Edinson Cavani has since commented on those remarks, but didn’t go quite as far as Suarez.
“I have never spoken to him,” Cavani said, but then made an excuse for Bielsa, adding: “He must have his reasons. I try to see things that way.
“Sometimes you don’t know the reasons for certain behaviours, sometimes there are other types of interests or decisions that are not only those of the coach.”
The Boca Juniors forward finished: “There are a lot of things that happen in football, things behind the scenes that players don’t necessarily know about and that they discover over the years.
“I always gave my all in the national team, and a decision had to be made [about retiring]. You have to be realistic and aware of things.
“There are things that help you make a decision, but I wanted to dedicate myself to Boca. There was also wear and tear.”
