Known as one of the game’s more unpleasant footballers, Diego Costa has been accused of something shocking by even his standards while at Atletico Madrid.
Costa played in the match that knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League last 16 in 2020, but that game was remembered for other reasons.
It was the last major footballing fixture before Covid-19 fully shut down sport and was played against medical advice with multiple European countries already in lockdown.
Estimates since claimed as many as 40 people died from Covid complications picked up at the match and that it helped spread the virus across England and Spain.
In fact, Costa did so himself in disgusting circumstances.
Reporter Hélène Hendriks recalled her dealings at that match with Costa, saying on a podcast: “First I spoke to Virgil van Dijk, then Diego Costa arrived.
“Do you know what Costa did? He walked up and deliberately coughed in the faces of everyone who was there.
“I don’t get angry easily, but I wanted to run after him and say, ‘What are you doing to me?’
“He actually coughed right in my face. To connect to the Netherlands, I was attached to a wire and I was following Diego Costa, so the whole camera fell over.
“I didn’t know what was happening; I thought it was absolutely outrageous. And two days later, I tested positive for the coronavirus.”
