Just a few months on from winning the MLS Cup, things are threatening to spiral at Inter Miami.
Head coach Javier Mascherano stepped down due to personal reasons on Tuesday but there may well be more going on than meets the eye.
Lionel Messi has so far stayed silent on his good friend and former teammate leaving, something that’s not gone unnoticed in Florida.
Messi is usually vocal on social media over such matters, posting tributes to Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba upon their summer retirments.
Yet no comment on Mascherano is causing concern.
Beckham speaks out
As such, owner David Beckham has been forced to play down the situation.
“It’s difficult,” he told CBS. “At some point we’ll have to find a new coach.
“He’s an incredible person, a great coach, the players adored him, but obviously, these things happen in football clubs and we have to move on.
“We need to let things settle down.”
Mascherano leaves Miami
In a statement on Tuesday, Mascherano said: “I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank the Club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments.
“I also want to thank the fans and La Familia, because none of this would have been possible without them.
“I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the Club all the best moving forward.
“I have no doubt that the Club will continue to achieve success in the future.”
