The Italian Government will end the Crescita Decree next season, stopping clubs from applying a 50% reduction on foreign players’ salaries.
The Decree, which is known as the ‘Beckham law’, was created to attract players such as the England star to play in Italy.
However, Italy’s Council of Ministers have now scrapped the law, in what the media called a ‘very tense’ meeting, during which vice-president Matteo Salvini said it would be ‘immoral’ to continue giving benefits to millionaires.
Serie A clubs have now expressed their concern, noting that this would ‘take away teams competitiveness, with fewer ticket sales and resources for training, and also less tax revenue’.
The policy is seen as an easy win for Italy’s far-right government, though, whose anti-immigration stance fits with removing benefits to immigrants who help the country’s economy.
