Cesc Fabregas won’t have many fans at AFCON after his complaints about striker Assane Diao being called up by Senegal.
Diao was a surprise addition to Pape Thiaw’s squad, given the 2021 champion’s strength in depth up front and that he has been declared injured by Como.
Yet in what many will be considered a very European view of things, Fabregas expected Diao to stay in Italy rather than playing a bit-part for his country.
“I’d rather not go into too much detail on the matter,” he said.
“He was called up and I spoke with him after the match against Inter. He knows exactly where I stand.
“I also spoke personally with the national team coach. It wasn’t a very pleasant conversation, frankly. So I completely disassociate myself from it.”
