With Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United career hanging by a thread, now might not be the best time for Bruno Fernandes to talk up a replacement.
But the Portugal midfielder couldn’t help himself when it came to the now-legendary Ruben Amorim.
Amorim arrived at Sporting CP in 2020 just months after Fernandes, and the midfielder may have rued the timing, as he’s since taken his boyhood club to two Primeira Liga titles after a lengthy baron run.
Now, Fernandes may finally have the chance to work for his countryman, with Amorim in the running to replace Ten Hag.
Speaking while on international duty, Fernandes was asked if Amorim is ready to step up to one of Europe’s biggest leagues, and he didn’t hold back.
“He is a coach who’s shown that he is ready,” he said. “Being Sporting’s coach and winning championships is not easy.
“Sporting went 20 years without winning a championship, mister Rúben came and has already won two. That, in itself, shows that his work is being done well.
“Now, whether he will be able to do the same in England or Spain or anywhere else, we will never know until he gets there. But I am sure that Mr. Rúben Amorim’s qualities are there for everyone to see.
“As for Sporting, I don’t think it’s anything new. Since Mister Rúben Amorim arrived at Sporting, I think they have been one of the teams playing the best football, they have been very consistent, the signings have been very successful.
“They are in a very good moment. They have just become champions last year, and this year they are already starting in the lead. They are a team that is very well prepared.”
