Ruben Amorim’s final home game as Sporting CP coach was outstanding, but also emotional.
The soon-to-be Manchester United manager hammered his future rivals Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League and said farewell to the José Alvalade Stadium in the best way possible.
Amorim‘s players hoisted him aloft after a club celebration, and later one of them paid an emotional tribute.
Speaking to TNT Brasil, Matheus Reis said: “Gratitude is the word I have for Amorim. People don’t know what he means to us.
“They only see what happens on the pitch, the victories, the titles we’ve won… But they can’t imagine how many players he helped.
“He was a father to so many players. I speak for myself: he believed in me when no one else did. And several other players who were nothing, some are here and others have already been sold because he did everything in the players’ lives.
“He means a lot to us, we are sad to see him go, but we know that this is football. And an opportunity like this cannot be missed.
“We are happy to finish like this and I can only wish the best for him and the rest of the coaching staff.”
