With things going very wrong indeed for Ruben Amorim, a return to boyhood club Benfica is now being discussed.
The notion had been mentioned by prospective president Noronha Lopes, despite Amorim’s past at Benfica’s fiercest of rivals – Lisbon neighbours Sporting.
Amorim started out at Benfica, graduating through the club’s academy and starring for the first team before later embarking on his coaching career with Braga.
Yet if he fails to have the kind of legendary career that Jose Mourinho achieved – which is now looking likely – Record editor Luís Pedro Sousa sees him heading back home.
“For Ruben Amorim to be sacked from Man United [it wouldn’t happen yet] out of that respect for Sporting,” he said.
“His departure from Sporting was very recent. And I doubt that—and even today you mentioned the question of there being more opportunities in the market—that he would want to return to his boyhood club so soon.
“I have no doubts that Ruben Amorim, unless he has a fabulous career like José Mourinho had, as José Mourinho has, it seems evident to me that sooner or later, Ruben Amorim will be the coach of Benfica.
“It just seems to me that it will always be later rather than sooner.”
