Jose Mourinho has kept things respectful when discussing Ruben Amorim’s firing by Manchester United.
The former Sporting coach was dismissed after an outburst at the board and a dire tenure in the Premier League.
Giving his take having also received short shrift at Old Trafford, Mourinho said: “I know my career at Manchester United well, and I also know the reason why I left.
“But as I always try to do when I leave a club, I close the door – or they close the door on me – and I try not to comment on what happened.
“One door closes, another opens. The history stayed there, the numbers stayed there, the medals came home, and that’s it.
“What happened with Ruben in this year and a half is something only Ruben can analyse. Only then will he make his view of the situation public.”
Mourinho was speaking before a Taca da Liga clash against Braga, which looks like his only chance of silverware this season.
Discussing the competition, A Bola journalist Rogério Azevedo said: “The League Cup is the trophy Mourinho is closest to winning before he goes to the national team and Amorim joins Benfica.”
This is far from the first time Amorim has been linked with Benfica, the club he played for and grew up with before later switching to Lisbon rivals Sporting.
Speaking in August before Mourinho moved to Benfica, Record editor Luís Pedro Sousa said: “For Ruben Amorim to be sacked from Man United [he wouldn’t join Benfica yet] out of that respect for Sporting.
“His departure from Sporting was very recent. And I doubt that—and even today you mentioned the question of there being more opportunities in the market—that he would want to return to his boyhood club so soon.
“I have no doubts that Ruben Amorim, unless he has a fabulous career like José Mourinho had, as José Mourinho has, it seems evident to me that sooner or later, Ruben Amorim will be the coach of Benfica.
“It just seems to me that it will always be later rather than sooner.”
