Borussia Dortmund will make more money by losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League final than by winning.
That’s according to BILD, who report that a clause in Jude Bellingham’s contract will offset the prize money on offer at Wembley.
Bellingham, the €100million summer signing from BVB, joined in a deal worth up to €135m, and BILD claim €25m of that will be paid out by Madrid should the English midfielder win the Champions League in his first season.
That figure, coupled with the €15m runners-up prize fund, equates to twice what Dortmund would collect by winning the trophy – €20m for this season’s victor.
The two teams collide on June 1 in London, and while Madrid understandably look like geniuses for their signing of Bellingham, it’s certainly worth paying tribute to Dortmund’s negotiators, who more often than not come out on top.
