Borussia Dortmund made it to their third-ever Champions League final on Tuesday night with a 1-0 win (2-0 agg.) over PSG.
Next up for BVB will be either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid at Wembley on June 1, but first, here are the best quotes from an incredible night in Paris.
Marcel Sabitzer to Sky: “I’ve always dreamed of being in the Champions League final. I was close to it once before, narrowly losing the semi-final with Leipzig, also against Paris. Luckily I was able to do that today. It’s something special, especially at Wembley. It’s really a perfect place to make history. I can’t wait for a few more weeks, but it’s going to be awesome. We had a very difficult group stage. Nobody believed we could do anything. We had one point after two games. We had a dream and we’re going to Wembley.”
Edin Terzic to Amazon: “You can tell by the joy: I think it will take a while to realize it. But we’re extremely happy. These are the images. That’s why we do it. We would have liked to have created a similar picture in our stadium last year. After the game [against Mainz] unfortunately, it looked a little different and our fans were there for us and today we were able to give a little bit back by managing to go to the Champions League final together again. Just pure gratitude, pure relief and pure joy and lots and lots of pride. We grew with every game and at some point we beat Milan. Milan were in the semi-finals last year. And if you eliminate a semi-finalist who hasn’t made that many transfers, then that can be good.”
Mats Hummels to Amazon: “The way they defended me at the corner, I knew that I could probably get the space. But they weren’t very physical in the duel and that’s why I thought to myself ‘I probably have the best chance of getting free here’ and Jule [Brandt] served it beautifully on my head. No matter who we face, we will face a very strong opponent, and a fight with the atmosphere, we did that very well today. We all believe in ourselves. Since the second game in the group stage, we have believed that we can survive in the Champions League and I think we have proven that so many times. There is really no reason for us not to believe that we can win the final to be able to.”
Hans-Joachim Watzke to Amazon: “I’m obviously incredibly happy. I’m happy for Mats. We’re somehow both in the final phase of our careers. As a result, neither of us would have expected to come to Wembley. And in that respect, it’s a great story. I’m completely euphoric by my standards. The fact is that we both know what we have in each other. Edin is someone who works meticulously and hard for his club and that’s my feeling.”
Matthias Sammer to Amazon: “You always needed that little bit of luck if you want to win a semi-final or final. Somehow they deserved it. They played passionate and honest football and thus pulled PSG’s teeth. They have done a lot of things well. Now they should be happy, but not exaggerate, because I don’t know whether there wouldn’t be an improvement if you won a final.“
Emre Can: “I’m very proud to be captain of this team. I’m touched, it’s unbelievable what we’ve achieved in this Champions League season. We all have the dream of winning it. There’s only one step left, we’re in the final.”
Sebastian Kehl: “It was all hell in the dressing room, loud music and alcohol. I would like Bayern. I have the feeling we still have a score to settle.”
