Benfica have announced the termination of Roger Schmidt’s contract just four games into the season.
The decision comes after the Eagles drew 1-1 with Moreirense, which came after two wins and an opening defeat to Famalicao.
In a brief statement the club said: “Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD informs that it has started negotiations with coach Roger Schmidt for the termination of the sports employment contract with immediate effect.”
Schmidt, previously of Bayer Leverkusen and PSV, took over at Benfica in 2022 and won the Primeira Liga in his debut season.
Last season Benfica ended the campaign with just the Portuguese Supercup to their name, and Schmidt was seen getting increasingly disgruntled in press conferences, repeatedly suggesting he should be sacked.
