Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has sensationally threatened to quit the club after a 1-1 draw with Farense.
The stalemate was the Eagles’ third in five games, and Lisbon rivals Sporting could now go four points clear at the top of the Primeira Liga, while Porto could leapfrog them into second.
Supporters at Estadio da Luz got particularly angry in the 64th minute when Schmidt removed the thrilling youngster Joao Neves from the field.
Water was thrown towards the German coach while players tried to calm the anger.
Benfica were a goal down at the time, and equalised seven minutes later through Rafa Silva, but they were unable to find a winner.
Speaking post-match, Schmidt said: “If I’m the problem, if Benfica needs a coach who can make the substitutions that the fans want, there’s no problem.
“I’ll leave, and there will be someone who can replace me and maybe even be better than before.
“If I’m the problem, I will give space for someone to do better than me.
“I have to be a good coach because this is a big club. If I’m not good enough, I will have to leave. It’s something I’ll think about.”
Schmidt is in his second season with Benfica, having won the title last term.
