As the world of football unites to condemn Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni alleged racism towards Vinicius Jr, club captain Nicolas Otamendi has also been called out.
Benfica’s Champions League play-off clash against Real Madrid saw a 10-minute delay as Vinicius alleged that Prestianni called him a ‘monkey’ after scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win.
Prestianni denies the allegations, but he and his team behaved terribly in response, including Jose Mourinho suggesting Vinicius was at fault.
Also singled-out has been captain Otamendi, with AS editor Tomas Roncero pointing out he was laughing at Vinicius and lifting his shirt to show his World Cup tattoo.
“For me, many people have been exposed. Prestianni has been exposed, but so has Otamendi,” he said.
“He’s made me very nervous. He’s complicit, and therefore, I consider him a racist because whoever laughs at a racist’s jokes is both complicit and racist.
“Otamendi is a racist, and even more dangerous because he’s a veteran.
“I’m at an age where I know exactly who’s worth it and who isn’t.
“Otamendi isn’t someone who behaves like a decent human being, someone who can’t claim to be a good guy.
“In life, you have to be a good guy through your actions, not what your friends tell you.
“What this man did on the field was strut around after what happened with Prestianni, and on top of that, he acted like a bully, saying, ‘Want more?’
“On top of everything, he takes off his shirt to further provoke Vinicius, showing off the World Cup.
“What you have to do with those people is point them out and tell them that you’re also guilty. It’s repulsive.”
