Bayern Munich are playing one of their most hated rivals this weekend, and it turns out there’s nothing friendly about the match.
The game called the ‘Telekom Cup’ will almost certainly be the most poorly attended of the season at the Allianz Arena.
But the reality is that it has to take place due to some terrible transfer dealings.
BILD report that Bayern still owe Leipzig money from the 2021 signing of Julian Nagelsmann.
Bayern paid a record €25million to get a coach out of their contract, but then fired him less than two seasons later.
The Bundesliga champions would then bring in Thomas Tuchel and fail to win the title, ending an 11-year streak.
The Telekom Cup was agreed upon at the time of the transfer, and all earnings from the match will go towards paying off what’s owed to Leipzig.
After being sacked by Bayern despite a Bundesliga win in his first season, Naglesmann made way for a failed Tuchel run.
He was then reportedly considered for a return after Bayern again changed their coach.
Eventually, the Bavarians ended up with Vincent Kompany and got back to their best.
