Luis Diaz may have lost some friends when he returns to Bayern Munich.
The Bundesliga side, in fact most German clubs, are seen as a haven against political hate, something which their star forward has openly welcomed.
Diaz has spent his time off since the World Cup finished cosying up to Colombia’s new far-right president.
He even performed a military salute alongside Abelardo de la Espriella to give the lawyer with no political or military experience exactly what he wanted.
Diaz’s new friend has a chequred past
Accused of sexual harassment, De la Espriella is anti abortion and has expressed his desire to reduce other women’s rights and change adoption laws.
He also said in a bizarre interview that as a child he tied fireworks to cats to see if they could fly, but enjoyed watching them explode.
Furthermore, Diaz’s new friend has promised to build 10 mega prisons across Colombia and ‘kill criminals like rats and cockroaches’.
Why Bayern members won’t be happy with Diaz
Bayern’s members are famously against such politics, which was highlighted in October when they successfully got the club to change course on hiring Jerome Boateng as an assistant coach.
A banner in the ultra’s section read: “Against abuse of power and physical and psychological violence in relationships.”
Later, during the club’s annual general meeting, executives were battered with questions about the possible deal.
One member, Thomas Jaud, stood up and said: “FC Bayern should clearly stand for its values.
“Even though it was only about an internship, the lack of a clear stance gave the impression that the issue of violence against women was not being taken seriously enough.”
Torsten Resack, a former pastor, later added: “FC Bayern should stand for values. We have leading figures in the club. I found it powerful how you, Mr. Hoeneß, made a statement against the AfD at Franz Beckenbauer’s memorial service.”
Herbert Hainer responded by saying: “That was a complex case. We are entitled to have spoken with Jerome.
“We jointly decided that he would not be doing an internship at FC Bayern.”
