Barcelona captain Marc Andre ter Stegen has the ‘whole team’ behind him after attacks about his recent behaviour.
The Germany No.1 has had a difficult 12 months, taken out by an ACL injury and then his place was blocked by Wojciech Szczęsny upon returning.
Things got worse as the club re-signed Szczęsny, added Joan Garcia, and then sporting director Deco gave a brutal snub to Ter Stegen.
Despite it all, he’s decided to stay, although back surgery has complicated matters, as has his statement about the ailment.
Ter Stegen informed fans about his surgery on social media, saying the prognosis would be three months.
That reportedly caused anger at Barca as the club need four months to block his salary off their wage bill, and the football federation will now be checking up.
Cadena SER pundit Santi Giménez tore into the German over his behaviour, saying: “Ter Stegen has made a big mistake in recent weeks with his attitude.
“He showed up in Sevilla for the Copa del Rey final and to lift the trophy, but he didn’t go to Milan to support his teammates.
“He chose the moments of glory and avoided the difficult ones. I think he’s behaved like a little boy, like a child.”
Others have echoed that sentiment, but not Ter Stegen’s teammates, with Frenkie De Jong coming out in support.
“For me, Marc remains our captain,” he said. “He is a world-class goalkeeper and he has always given his all for this club. The whole team supports him.”
Ferran Torres added: “Marc deserves to remain captain . His experience speaks for itself.”
While Gavi further strengthened the point, saying: “Marc is a club legend who must be respected.”
